OEM & ODM Basics
8 questions
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) means you supply the formula or full product specifications, and the manufacturer produces it under your brand name. You own the formula IP. The manufacturer handles production, filling, and quality control. OEM gives you full product differentiation and exclusivity, but requires either an existing formula or investment in custom formulation development.
ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) means the manufacturer's own R&D team develops a formula to your brief. You specify the product type, key actives, performance claims, texture, and target price point — they develop, you review and approve. ODM is the most common model for international brands entering Korean manufacturing, as it removes the need for an in-house chemist while still allowing significant customization.
The key difference is who develops the formula. With OEM, you bring the formula — the manufacturer produces it. With ODM, the manufacturer creates the formula to your brief — you approve and brand it. OEM offers greater IP ownership and differentiation. ODM is faster, lower-cost to start, and leverages the manufacturer's R&D expertise. Most first-time Korean sourcing projects start as ODM.
Private label cosmetics means you sell a manufacturer's existing, pre-approved formula under your own brand name. The manufacturer has already developed and stability-tested the formula. You select it, customize the packaging and label, and launch. It's the fastest path to market (4–8 weeks), the lowest MOQ, and the lowest development cost — but offers no formula exclusivity. Competitors can use the same base formula.
White label and private label are often used interchangeably in the cosmetics industry. Technically, white label refers to a completely unbranded product ready to be labeled by any buyer, while private label can involve slightly more customization (fragrance, color, minor ingredient adjustments). In practice, most Korean manufacturers use both terms to describe existing-formula products you brand as your own.
In cosmetics manufacturing, the terms largely overlap. White label typically means a fully standardized product with zero modification — you apply your label as-is. Private label usually allows minor customization: selecting fragrance, adjusting color, swapping one or two ingredients, or customizing packaging. Korean manufacturers generally offer a spectrum from pure white label (fastest, lowest MOQ) through private label (some customization) to full ODM (full formula development).
It depends on where you are in your brand journey. Private label is best for testing a market quickly with minimal investment. ODM is best for established brands that want a differentiated product without building an in-house R&D function. OEM is best for brands that already have proprietary formulas and want Korean manufacturing quality and scale behind them. Most brands start with private label or ODM, then move to OEM as volume grows.
No. Most Korean manufacturers offer ODM services where their R&D team develops formulas to your brief. You provide a product concept, target actives, texture preferences, and market requirements — they develop the formula. If you already have a formula (from an independent lab or previous manufacturer), you can bring it as a true OEM project. Either path is supported by Korean manufacturers.
